Belton's Geer Hotel (Info Update 7/13/04)

The earliest maps of Belton show a hotel on this site owned by A. R. Broyles, built in 1853.  Later, G. W. McGee purchased the hotel and enlarged its accommodations with a wooden two-story addition.  In 1907, H. M. Geer purchased the Belton Hotel and enlarged the structure by building a 3-story brick addition in place of the two-story wooden structure.  After being used as apartments for Belton Mills employees, this brick addition was razed in 1965.  The smaller building on the left is the only portion of the Hotel that remains standing and is the present day location of Horton's Pharmacy.  Numbers over the doorways denoting rooms in the upstairs of this building are still visible.

This Photo was taken in 1908.

Farmers' Bank in Belton (Info Update 7/7/04)

The Farmer's Bank (established about 1902) is currently located 2 doors down from Horton's Pharmacy.  The building has lost its crenelated top and the doorways are different.  At one time the building was occupied by Horton's Electric.  Belton was one of the few southern towns during the Great Depression (1929-1935) to have no banks failures.

Photo taken in 1909 and processed by Belton Drug Co. in Belton, S.C.
