Activities:

May 15, 2008 Meeting

Dr. Doris Cole & Lion President Gerald Waters (Click for larger View)Doris Cole, Outreach Worker for Clemson University's "Strong Communities" program, was the guest speaker at the Belton Lions Club Meeting on Thursday, May 15, 2008.  Doris told the Belton Lions about two programs.  One was the "Building Dreams Mentoring Program" for children ages 4 - 17 who have one or more incarcerated parents.  This program offers anyone 18 years or older the opportunity to make a difference in children's lives by providing a positive role model for young people through a safe and trusting relationship.

"Strong Communities" is a network of activities and services for families with young children.  Family Activity Centers are available to provide five services:  Kids and Families Play Groups, Parent - Child Activities, Parents' Night Out, Financial Education and Counseling, and Chat with a Family Advocate.  Another part of the "Strong Communities" program is Family Support for families that experience severe or chronic needs.  The last part of the program is called Safe Families.  More intensive support is offered in this situation to provide 24-hour care or longer if necessary through partner families who open their homes to the children.

Doris said that both programs were designed to build community support for children and families.  As Doris said, "We can't wait on government agencies to solve the problem."

More information about these programs can be found on the internet at www.clemson.edu/ifnl.

The Belton Lions Club meets every 3rd Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm at Marshall Primary School.  Visitors and prospective men and women members are welcome.
