“Second Annual Doggie Fun in the Sun Day”
A planned event in
Belton will celebrate the dog days of summer and raise funding for a
worthy cause, the Anderson County Animal Shelter. “Doggie Fun in
the Sun Day” will be held on Saturday, September 13, from 10:00 AM until
3:00 PM at Leda Poore Park in Belton, SC (Hwy. 20 - 2 miles out of
Belton towards Williamston). The public and their dogs
are invited to attend.
In addition to
having a fun recreational event for owners and their dogs, the
purpose of Doggie Fun in the Sun Day is to raise awareness of the
plight of Anderson County animals.
“Last year, the
children and their friends raised almost $300 to help alleviate the
costs of food, housing and medical care for animals at the county
facility," said parent volunteer Alison Darby. "However, more
than 200 dogs and cats are euthanized every week at the shelter.”
"It breaks my heart
that we don't have the facilities or the funding to prevent
euthanizing so many of the animals at the shelter," said Michelle
Dodd, director of the Anderson County Animal Shelter. "Animal
rescue groups help by shuttling the dogs to locations outside SC
where people will adopt them, but the overpopulation of animals in
our county due to the lack of spaying or neutering is a real
problem."
The fun, free event
will feature games and crafts, health and training seminars,
exhibitions, and more. Interested people can adopt a dog from
the Anderson County Animal Shelter Adopt-a-pet van or have their own
dogs implanted with microchips by shelter technicians. Doggie
items, grooming sessions, raffles, and hotdogs will all be available
for sale.
If you would like
to be a sponsor of the day's activities or your group would like to
host a booth to distribute information or offer a service, please
Alison Darby at 864 958-5264 by August 1.
