Juror, Carl Blair:

Born in Atchison, Kansas, Carl Blair received his BFA from the University of Kansas and his MFA from Kansas City Art Institute.  For 41 years, Blair was a professor of art at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC.  Now retired, he continues to paint and exhibit throughout the Southeast.

Blair has a long history of awards and exhibitions.  Exhibitions include Art in Embassies Program; Ringling Museum, Chattanooga, Tennessee.  In 1995, the Greenville Museum of Art hosted a major retrospective of his work.  In 2000, a forty-year retrospective show was held at the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia.  Blair uses nature as his point of departure.  He refers to his style as "neither realistic, nor abstract.  I refer to my work as visual poetry."

Carl Blair was a member of the South Carolina Arts Commission for twelve years and also served as chairman of the commission for two years.  In 1970, he and two other members of the Bob Jones University art faculty, Emery Bopp and Darell Koons, founded Hampton III Gallery, one of the first commercial galleries in Upstate South Carolina.  In 2005, Blair was awarded the Verner Award for Lifetime Achievement, the highest award given by the State of South Carolina in the Arts.

"Enjoyment of Beauty involves not only the eyes, but also the emotions of the heart.  They must be balanced with the viewer's intellect and spirit." - Carl
