Local artists JoAnne Anderson of Belton
and Rosemary Moore of Honea Path have works of art that were
chosen to be in the SC Watercolor Society's 29th Annual Awards
Exhibition. Other artists from
the upstate include Jeanet Dreskin, Lynn Greer, & Carole Tinsley
of Greenville; Randy Armstrong of Greer; Michael Slattery of
Taylors; Janet Galusza of Anderson; Barbara Stitt and Steve
Garner of Simpsonville.
Of the 172 entries that were submitted
by society members statewide, the juror, Martha Mayberry,
selected 52 paintings for the exhibition. The top thirty
paintings received $9,325 in awards. With a Bachelor of
Arts (Studio Art) from Converse College the juror, Martha
Tonissen Mayberry, has been the Registrar and Associate Curator
of Prints and Drawings at the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte,
NC since 1977.
In her juror's statement, Mayberry
said, "I am pleased with the diversity within the exhibition and
believe that it represents a group of talented artists. In
selecting works, I tried to concern myself not only with the
timeless considerations of color, composition, drawing and
interesting imagery but also originality of expression, the
exploration of mixed media and unique narrative."
JoAnne Anderson said, "Art is about who
we are and what we have to say. A place within us knows
what this is and how to express it. I've discovered that
the best way for me to find this special place is to give up
conscious control of the process and let the painting lead.
If the painting takes over and I allow myself to follow, then --
and only then -- will anything expressive occur. This
vital transition can be evasive and temperamental. It can
be invited and coaxed, but never forced."
Rosemary Moore said, "A love of color
and a desire to create something that is enjoyable to myself and
others is my inspiration. Art gives me a focus for life
experiences and it helps to create a balance and harmony in an
otherwise chaotic world."
The South Carolina Watermedia Society (SCWS),
the largest statewide visual arts guild, nurtures and promotes
